In her artistic practice, Berlin-based artist Sofia Crespo experiments with artificial intelligence, neural networks and computed image recognition. Trauma Doll brings to life an artificial intelligence that suffers from mental illness like depression or PTSD. To cope with its anxieties, this A.I. trauma doll gathers visual and textual elements from all over the internet – quotes, headlines, photographs, code, drawings – and assembles them to create highly dense collages that appear digital in their aesthetics yet also reminiscent of a more traditional poster design. According to the artist, Trauma Doll “sees patterns everywhere in the web and connects them”, generating forms of expression that tap into a larger societal discussion of how our mental and emotional landscapes are increasingly influenced by digital technologies. Delegating the profoundly human experience of mental illness to a generative A.I. authorship, Trauma Doll raises questions of agency as well as the affective and psychological aspects of our networked society.
