Below you will find information on current and previous projects of Fotomuseum Winterthur.

Photographic Encounters

With the biennial format Photographic Encounters Fotomuseum Winterthur and Christoph Merian Verlag accompany a photographer/artist in the realisation of an exhibition and a publication. A jury consisting of experts and representatives of Fotomuseum Winterthur and Christoph Merian Verlag selects a photographer in a multi-stage process who will work on a project in close cooperation with the museum and the publishing house for around twelve months.

SITUATIONS

Memes and GIFs, selfies and Instagram filters, algorithms and neural networks, screenshots and drone images, networked feminism and online activism, content moderators, influencers and attention economies: In recent decades, the networked digital image has spawned new visual forms and cultural practices at a phenomenal speed – with unprecedented social and political ramifications. The SITUATIONS format has tracked and analysed these photographic developments over a period of five years.

Still Searching...

From 2012 to 2023, the discursive blog format of Fotomuseum Winterthur subjected all aspects of photography and its role in visual culture to interdisciplinary scrutiny. The approximately 50 bloggers that contributed to Still Searching… discussed photographic media and forms within their complex technological, capitalist and ideological networks and negotiated some of the most pressing and relevant questions surrounding photography.
