“Software computes for us the world that we see. Google, Apple, and Microsoft – or whichever digital giants succeed them – interpose themselves between us and the world, carefully filtering what we may see and know by means of screens and software alike. The view seen by the fighter pilot has become the little private world of the phone screen carried around wherever we go. While we think of this as ‘our’ world, it is one that is carefully policed and filtered for us before we even get to see it.”
