Jules Spinatsch does not need templates to make a document of his time. He does not need a bloody street battle or a group of dubious politicians to depict the G8 summit in Genoa. Spinatsch captures the details, the little things that happen on the sidelines, things that form the background to the events. He focuses on the barricades made of heaped-up containers – symbols of trade and the economy – deserted places, and minor matters. In their richness of detail, these things yield an unconventional overall picture of politicised places, where the key regulations enforce security and control, so that politicians and business moguls can carry out their negotiations within a sheltered vacuum.
