Shadow Creatures in Photography, Psychology and AI

What can spirit photographs tell us about our fears, our grief and the feelings and impulses that remain beneath the surface?
In this dialogical tour of the exhibition Shadow Creatures – From Spirit Photography to the Ghosts of the Algorithm, two perspectives come together: those of curator Marco De Mutiis and psychotherapist Rahel Sprecher.
The exhibition traces a path from historical spirit photography to the computational phantoms of the present. At its centre are ghosts and other mysterious beings that emerge in analogue and digital image worlds. Together, De Mutiis and Sprecher explore the psychological dimensions of these images. What role can spirit photographs play in dealing with grief and traumatic experiences? What can shadow creatures reveal about unconscious fears and emotions? And what can they tell us about how we perceive ourselves and others?
Through a psychological lens, the tour offers a new perspective on the exhibition and its shadow creatures.
