SITUATION #151
Since its foundation in 2009, Kickstarter has become a successful crowdfunding platform for aspiring entrepreneurs who look for financial support to make their creative ideas reality. Silvio Lorusso archived thousands of unrealised Kickstarter projects that failed to attract any backers through his project, Kickended. On Kickended, the failed business dreams with zero dollars pledge live a second life, their abstract ideas and unreachable dreams forever at display. In doing so, the aesthetics of the vernacular language of the unsuccessful images which are otherwise overlooked is displayed on a platform. Kickended can be read as a critique of the message that crowdfunding websites send out: success is democratic and easily reachable. In a larger context, Lorusso’s work problematises the characteristics of today’s digital economy and entrepreneurship.
