SITUATION #5

Seven years after his exhibition The Space Between Us (2008) Magnum photographer Alec Soth returns to Winterthur for an evening to sign his new publication Songbook, the first edition of which was sold out after just a few weeks. In this volume Soth brings together in narrative form multiple short trips through rural America, which he took with writer Brad Zellar. They self-published these experiences with LBM Dispatch. During these journeys Soth consciously sought out direct interactions with people of different backgrounds. Working from the motto “I donʼt like pure chance, I need to set up a system that allows for chance to happen,” he attended countless festivals, dance nights, and community events, experiencing, to his surprise, common moments of great power.
