In 1950, while working as an optician, Meatyard took up photography and over the next two decades he created a significant body of work. Photographing his immediate surroundings, his family and his friends, Meatyard produced enigmatic and phantasmagorical images that implicitly reveal his social and economic world. A devotee of modernist literature, he was influenced by writers such as Gertrude Stein and Ezra Pound.
