In 1999 Stephen Wilks created a fictitious figure—a “Travelling Donkey” with whom he playfully explored the world. With a Berlin studio grant at the time from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) Wilks absorbed the raw vibes of the German capital. During his forays through the city he took on the persona of a restless nomad, with a keen eye for hidden signs and discrete moments on the foreign terrain. Wilks was invited by Fotomuseum Winterthur to create the works in the collection for the exhibition Remake Berlin (2000).
