Roni Horn’s “Verne’s Journey” belongs to her series of artist’s books on Iceland, which she began in the early 1990s. In her nuanced photographs the Icelandic landscape, characterized by volcanic activity and a rough, unpredictable arctic climate, becomes a symbol of elemental, cyclical movement. The state of constant growth and decay, which the artist makes visible in her images of the landscape, corresponds to her reflections on identity as a momentary instance that constantly evades final definition.
