Viviane Sassen realises most of her projects in Africa, where the photographer spent part of her childhood. The boundaries between her commissioned photography, for example for fashion magazines, and her artistic work are fluid. Sassen uses encounters with friends and acquaintances to develop archetypal situations and sublime moments. With richly contrasting shadows and staged interventions, she renders her protagonists anonymous, shielding them from the viewer’s gaze.
