Case Study: Pin-up Culture

The collection of the Fotomuseum Winterthur houses various works that tie in with pin-up culture on a visual, material, content-related or conceptual level. These include Lorna Simpson’s Summer ’57/Summer ’09 (Group 6), Zoe Leonard’s The 1998 Bearded Lady Calendar, Starring Jennifer Miller, and Frida Orupabo’s Weather Girl. This Case Study focuses on the pin-up genre as a reference culture and examines the ambivalences in its production and reception, as well as moments of self-empowerment and inclusion, especially for Black and queer protagonists.
