Stéphanie Gygax is known for documentary-style photographic works that are left open to different interpretations. She proceeds in a similarly ambiguous way in her edition Useful Landscape, photographing a number of famous beaches in the South Seas not in the expected brilliant colours, but in sober black and white. Even people who do not travel are probably familiar with the colours of these distant locales; in manufacturing desire with its projections, the global tourism machine marks even the last untouched places on Earth. *1975 in La Chaux-de-Fonds (Switzerland), lives in Zurich.
