Shadow Creatures – From Spirit Photography to the Ghosts of the Algorithm

Digital images are haunted by ghostly beings: algorithmic figures lurking in photorealistic computer games, cryptids nesting in data sets and spectral figures made manifest by AI prompts.

Ranging from the algorithmic phantoms of the present to the spirit photography of the 19th century, Shadow Creatures shows how images conjure up beings that inhabit our personal, social and political subconscious. The exhibition steers our gaze from the promise of light to the shadows, where ghostly and non-human forms imprint our view of images and our shared imagination.
