Screen Walk with Nina Davies

Nina Davies will introduce both the online and IRL audience to her ‘liked’ TikToks and share her hot takes on why some of this content holds more depth than initially appears. She will demonstrate how algorithms speak to us through memetic content as a sort of language. Throughout this Screen Walk we will encounter ads that adopt the aesthetics of conspiracy, feature length films that can be watched in two minutes, people taking drones for walks and, of course, lots of dancing. This live event will serve as a performance of Nina’s ongoing project For An Imaginary Page.

In Screen Walks, a series of live-streamed explorations of digital spaces, selected artists and researchers investigate artistic strategies taking place online. The project gives an insight into practices using the screen as a medium. From re-contextualising pictures found on online marketplaces and uncovering data brokers’ invisible circulation of images to analysing in-game photography and the social, political and economic implications of games – Screen Walks examines various approaches, offers a behind-the-scenes look at artists’ work and uncovers new, current and forgotten digital spaces. Screen Walks is a collaboration between The Photographers’ Gallery in London and Fotomuseum Winterthur.

Biography:
Working primarily with video, performance, writing and installation, Nina Davies considers current dance phenomena in relation to the wider socio-technical environments from which they emerge. Previous research projects have included the recent commodification of the dancing body on digital platforms and rethinking dances of today as traditional dances of the future. Oscillating between the use of fiction and non-fiction, her work helps build new critical frameworks for engaging with dance practices.
