Screen Walk with Emma Agnes Sheffer

Since 2018, Emma Agnes Sheffer has been collecting repetitive imagery from Instagram within a specific aesthetic genre of ‘adventure photography’. Lining up sets of nearly identical images, Sheffer questions the meaning of originality and how digital aesthetic trends influence our reality. In her Screen Walk, the artist will guide us through one of her work sessions where she selects images, sorts them into categories and creates compositions for her project while explaining her methodology and answering questions.

In Screen Walks, a series of live-streamed explorations of digital spaces, selected artists and researchers investigate artistic strategies taking place online. The project gives an insight into practices using the screen as a medium. From re-contextualising pictures found on online marketplaces and uncovering data brokers’ invisible circulation of images to analysing in-game photography and the social, political and economic implications of games – Screen Walks examines various approaches, offers a behind-the-scenes look at artists’ work and uncovers new, current and forgotten digital spaces. Screen Walks is a collaboration between The Photographers’ Gallery in London and Fotomuseum Winterthur.

Emma Agnes Sheffer is an artist and film maker based on Dena’ina Ełnena, Anchorage, Alaska. Sheffer studied both film and television production and fine art at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.
