Opening and aperitif

Photographic images fragment bodies, arrest movement, render our behaviours observable and put them into a new order. Photographs allow even the slightest deviation to be diagnosed and classified as non-standard, which, in turn, further reinforces established notions of standard social behaviour. At the same time, photography is instrumental in producing such deviations in the first place. The cluster SITUATIONS/Deviant examines contemporary shifts in (ab)normal behaviour in the age of digital surveillance systems, preemptive technologies and (self-)control imposed by images in circulation.
