It was in the bars of Boston that Nan Goldin began work on The Ballad of Sexual Dependency. In this major project she photographed herself and her friends – directly, intimately, close up. The result is a portrayal of sexuality, relationships, power, and identity that is at once tender and hard-hitting. For a long time she photographed without natural light, using harsh, even blinding flashlight.
