The large-format photographs of New England suburban life that Anna Kanai created as a student at Yale are also explorations of a wider world. The condominiums and suburban houses are only just visible through a veil of shrubbery, bare winter branches and undergrowth. This semi-permeable membrane permits stolen glances and fictitious communication in both directions. The pictures seem slightly voyeuristic, or like the findings of a researcher or an explorer picking their way through the undergrowth of domesticity. What they reveal is a world determined to screen itself and elude the gaze of others.
