Me first. Five friends in Zurich is Nathan Beck’s sensitive documentation of a group of young teens in an urban milieu in Switzerland, to whom notions such as ‘recession’ and ‘fear of the future’ were still unknown in 1995. Beck follows five friends during evening get-togethers, out on the town, and at private parties, sober or intoxicated. The camera is always present, an intrinsic element of the situation. Images can only capture such intimacy through the implicit understanding between photographer and the photographed.
