In the works of Michel François, seemingly incompatible elements come together in perplexing density. Rich in associative strength, they challenge the customary classification of images. Nothing would be more alien to the sculptor, photographer, and filmmaker than to coerce the ambivalent, sensual world of the present into hierarchical order. His 36 Posters Distributed Between 1996–2006 (whose title succinctly describes the artist’s approach) perfectly reflects the open-ended character of his creations.
