In the 1960s, influenced by Walker Evans and Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander began to develop a kind of realist photography that had less to do with a particular theme but was more an approach to photography as a whole. He made many self-portraits, using mirrors, shadows, and, frequently, stark perspectives, in order to explore various aspects of himself. In 1984 the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) invited Friedlander to work on an artistic photography project that would reflect upon the new world of the office as created by the introduction of computer technology.
