As a member of the so-called Pictures Generation, along with Cindy Sherman, Richard Prince, Robert Longo and Sherrie Levine, Sarah Charlesworth belongs to a group of artists who were fascinated by – and yet distrustful of – the mass media and consumer culture of the 1970s and ’80s. Charlesworth often worked with found materials – for example, in her series Modern History, by removing all of the columns of text from the Herald Tribune in order to reflect upon the rhetorical and social functions of images.
