Since the 1970s Martha Rosler has been a critical voice in the rhetorical use of photographic images. Her 1974 texts and visual documentations of New York’s Bowery and her 1967-72 collages of interiors and Vietnam photos form an incisive examination of the ideological interaction of language and image. In 2004, the war in Iraq prompted Rosler, in Hooded Captives, to take a clear stance against the repeated imperialist behaviour of her own country.
