Villiger’s detailed Polaroids of her own body became the benchmark for all later artists in the field. Hers is a photography of almost unbearable self-scrutiny: examining, dissecting, ragmenting and juxtaposing individual, harshly-cropped details of a physical landscape. Her work combines painterly and sculptural elements in a photo-performance that tells of the struggle to forge a sense of wholeness out of the fragments of a physical identity that is both self and other.
