The series Frühstücksgasse (breakfast lane) describes a nameless alley in the heart of Cairo. A picture of the neighboring area, viewed from the top floor of an apartment building, unfolds in one hundred and forty images. The same buildings, roofs, and trees appear repeatedly—in the light of midday, at sunset, or at night in the glare of electric lights. It is a form of repetition that sharpens our perception. Through slight shifts in perspective, light conditions, and weather, we notice new details. Daniela Keiser’s expansive installation simultaneously presents Cairo as a city that barely seems to move and whose decrepit office and apartment buildings appear to belong to a bygone modernity.
