What happens when an avatar exists independently from a real world referent? Can the placeholder become an autonomous entity? Are IRL and online realities intertwined worlds or separated and independent realms? Is it even relevant anymore to know the “real” behind the on-screen entity? Is an avatar a hiding strategy or does it allow for new forms of interaction?

LaTurbo Avedon is a digital artist and permanent resident of the internet who only lives within the computer screen. Working with digital sculptures, virtual performances and web environments, she focuses on the specificity of digital media and online space. Moving fluidly between social media platforms, game consoles and websites, her works challenge the notion of representation and art in virtual space as well as the ideas of existence as a digital entity.

At the launch of SITUATIONS/Placeholder that took place on Friday, 7 April 2017, the artist presented Spring Diary as a performance-screening that was created specifically for the event.
