With the founding of Fotomuseum in 1993, the collection of contemporary photography became an important aspect of its activity. Through purchases and above all generous gifts and permanent loans by private patrons and foundations, around 8,000 photographic objects have joined the collection to date. Part of Fotomuseum’s collection documents the contemporary exhibition programme and in this way creates a physical archive of international works and groups of works from 1960 right up to the present. In addition to colour and black-and-white photographs, as well as a growing ephemera collection including print works, posters and artist books, the definition of what is photographic is expanding. Over the past few years, analogue and digital moving images have been purchased in the form of projections and installations.
