As the godfather of modern art, Marcel Duchamp reconfirmed the central role of Eros in art with his phrase “éros, c’est la vie.” Nobuyoshi Araki, a major figure in contemporary Japanese photography, shares this view. Araki—explicit and eccentric, yet imbued with unerring finesse—constructs his images of young Japanese women like a dance of dark desires. At the start of his career, he published his now famous book Sentimental Journey, a photographic essay of his honeymoon (1971).
