Screen Walk with Morehshin Allahyari

In this Screen Walk artist Morehshin Allahyari will guide the audience through the She Who Sees The Unknown archive. The artist built it with the goal to find, introduce and re-figure stories of female and non-binary/queer figures in West Asian ancient stories that are often misrepresented or forgotten. She Who Sees The Unknown was created with the concept of “Digital Colonialism” and the protection of knowledge in mind. Allahyari defines Digital Colonialism as a framework for critically examining the tendency for information technologies to be deployed in ways that reproduce colonial power relations. While giving a personal walk through the archival creation, an image library and material embedded on the project’s website, the artist will examine cultural codes and language barriers, revealing what is beyond the surface.

In Screen Walks, a series of live-streamed explorations of digital spaces, selected artists and researchers investigate artistic strategies taking place online. The project gives an insight into practices using the screen as a medium. From re-contextualising pictures found on online marketplaces and uncovering data brokers’ invisible circulation of images to analysing in-game photography and the social, political and economic implications of games – Screen Walks examines various approaches, offers a behind-the-scenes look at artists’ work and uncovers new, current and forgotten digital spaces. Screen Walks is a collaboration between The Photographers’ Gallery in London and Fotomuseum Winterthur.
